These words of Jesus have been a source of great trouble to many. Can we really eat the body and blood of Christ?
One of my philosophies is to take the Bible literally unless it’s impossible to do so. This passage is obviously one of those. So we must conclude it is a spiritual act eating and consuming being recommended by Christ.
But what is the activity? Some say it would be Communion or the Eucharist that imitates what Jesus did the at the Last Supper. I think that’s part of it.
I think the point Jesus was trying to get across to us was deep, deep intimacy and interaction with Him. I think Jesus was making available to us the most satisfying connection – soul to soul, mind to mind, spirit to spirit and in some day even body to body.
So as we pray let us seek to be in the midst of Him – experience His body and blood be in us through us and around us. He is supernaturally united with us. Supernatural intimacy that can be experienced here on earth with the fullness received only when we see him face-to-face in Paradise.
